With their single-shell form, Charles and Ray Eames created a chair for every need, in every way, for everyone. As with all their concepts, the shell chair evolved over time, not overnight. As Charles noted about the development of the Molded Plywood Chairs, “Yes, it was a flash of inspiration, a kind of 30-year flash.”

After experimenting with single-form plywood and stamped metal for their shell design, the Eameses turned to fiberglass and experimented with bent wire. When fiberglass production proved unhealthy for the environment, the decision was made to switch production to 100 percent recyclable polypropylene. And now, with advancements in safe fiberglass composition and dynamic veneer technologies, the evolution continues with the Molded Fiberglass and Molded Wood Chairs.
