FREMONT TROLL

Year Built: 1990

Artist Name: Steve Badanes

Fun Fact: The Volkswagen Beetle the troll crushes in his left hand originally contained a time capsule of Elvis memorabilia. This was later removed after the car was vandalized.

Medium: Exterior Sculpture; Rebar steel, wire and 2 tons of messy ferroconcrete

Neighborhood: Fremont

Address: N 36th St, Seattle, WA 98103

In 1989, the Fremont Arts Council launched an art competition in response to the city's request to establish rehabilitation underneath the north end of the Aurora bridge. This particular area underneath the bridge was becoming a dumping ground and haven for many local drug dealers, ultimately, the competition's goal was to create a positive impact as its community reshaped. Steve Badanes and his team won the competition later that year with a design inspired by the troll in the folktale Billy Goat's Gruff.
