GreenWorld® 2005 NAKED
SUSTAINABILITY UNCOVERED
Thursday, April 7, 2005
Bell Harbor Convention Center
Seattle, Washington
Success!
With a fresh new NAKED concept, evening schedule and "living a sustainable lifestyle" theme, GreenWorld® 05 was unquestionably informative, inspirational, educational, and fun. With nearly 400 attendees, it was also completely sold out.
Keynote
The Keynote speaker, Jean-Michel Cousteau presented "The Great Ocean Adventure," touching on topics ranging from his environmentally responsible Fiji Island Resort to the world's rapidly disappearing coral reef's. He entertained the audience with a speech that was interesting, enlightening and humorous; a well rounded mixture of eye-opening facts and amusing anecdotes.
Interactive Education
The Interactive Education component of the evening stimulated many a lively conversation and encouraged interaction and discussion among the attendees. Information and facts about sustainability and environmental concerns could be found throughout the venue on coasters, posters, and table centerpieces.
Recycling Bins
Six area schools participated in the Recycling Bin contest and created creative, artistic containers that were displayed and then auctioned off during the event. Congratulations to the students from the Art Institute of Seattle who did AIS proud and won first prize for the best recycling bin.
Exhibits
The GreenWorld® Gallery showcased some of the most innovative products available. The vendor exhibits were designed and built by the committee and provided the viewer with clear, concise and interesting information about the companies and products on display. The committee raised the bar this year by limiting the number of exhibits to a select few vendors who were chosen for their overall commitment to the environment and the sustainable properties of the product shown. Incorporating organic food, sustainable fashions, environmentally responsible furniture and carpets, ultra-hip music and an edgy, night-club atmosphere the Afterglow wowed the attendees, added a totally new element and set the standard for future GreenWorld® events!

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Jean-Michel Cousteau, famed oceanographer, explorer, filmmaker, and son of the legendary Jacques Cousteau, has spent his life communicating to people of all nations and generations his love and concern for our planet. A trained architect, he founded the Ocean Futures Society in 1998 to carry on his father's work. The Ocean Futures Society is a non-profit marine conservation and education organization that serves as a "Voice for the Ocean." A tireless spokesperson, Cousteau impresses an ethic of conservation, research, and marine education, while realistically addressing the economic practicalities. In 2002, he made history by becoming the first person to represent the environment in an Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. His current effort will be to embark for "The Most Remote Islands on the Planet" in a new documentary, Voyage to Kure, for PBS. An impassioned spokesman and diplomat for the environment, he reaches out to the public through a variety of media. He has produced over 70 films that have earned him numerous Emmy, Peabody, and Cable Ace Awards.
Explorer, environmentalist, educator, film producer: for more than four decades Jean-Michel Cousteau has used his vast and varied experiences to communicate to people of all nations and generations his love and concern for our water planet.
Since first being 'thrown overboard' by his father at the age of seven with newly invented SCUBA gear on his back, Jean-Michel has been exploring the ocean realm. The son of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, Jean-Michel spent much of his life with his family exploring the world's oceans aboard Calypso and Alcyone. After his mother's death in 1990 and his father's in 1997, Jean-Michel founded Ocean Futures Society in 1999 to carry on this pioneering work.
Responding to his father's call to 'carry forward the flame of his faith,' Jean-Michel's Ocean Futures Society, a non-profit marine conservation and education organization, serves as a 'Voice for the Ocean' by developing marine education programs. Jean-Michel serves as an impassioned spokesman and diplomat for the environment, reaching out to the public through a variety of media. He has produced over 70 films, and been awarded the Emmy, the Peabody Award, the 7 d'Or - the French equivalent of the Emmy, and the Cable Ace Award.
Today, as President of Ocean Futures Society, Jean-Michel travels the globe, meeting with world leaders and policymakers, both at the grassroots level and the highest echelons of government and business, educating young people, documenting stories of change, hope, and lending his reputation and support to help energize alliances for positive change.
Through Ocean Futures Society, Jean-Michel continues to produce environmentally oriented programs and television specials, public service announcements, multi-media programs for schools, web-based marine content, books, articles for magazines and newspaper columns, and public lectures, reaching millions of people all over the world.
In his most recent effort, Cousteau will embark for "The Most Remote Islands on the Planet" in a new documentary. Voyage to Kure, targeted to air on public television nationally in Fall 2004 is a six-week adventure, being filmed for public television, and marks a renewal of the Cousteau legend as award-winning ocean filmmaker. He will take his Ocean Futures Society team on a quest to explore wildlife and Polynesian culture along the vast, 1,200-mile chain of ecosystems called the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands that end on the remote island of Kure.
In February 2002, Jean-Michel became the first person to represent the environment in an Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. Jean-Michel joined seven other highly esteemed individuals, who represented the five continents symbolized in the Olympic Rings and the three tenets of the Olympics. Jean-Michel has also been recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Athens Environmental Foundation for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
In 1997 on Earth Day, Jean-Michel led the first-ever undersea live, interactive, video chat on Microsoft Internet, from the coral reefs of Fiji celebrating the International Year of the Reef and answering questions from 'armchair divers' throughout the world via the Internet. In April 1998, highlighting the International Year of the Ocean, Jean-Michel participated in a live downlink from the Space Shuttle Columbia to CNN New York, discussing NASA's contribution to ocean awareness with astronaut marine biologist, Rick Linnehan. In 1998, Jean-Michel Cousteau was a spokesperson for the United States Pavilion at Expo '98 in Lisbon, Portugal.
Acting on a childhood dream to build cities under the sea, Jean-Michel pursued a degree in architecture, graduating from the Paris School of Architecture in 1964. Artificial floating islands, schools, and the headquarters of an advanced marine studies center in Marseilles, France are among his projects. More recently he has been involved with the Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort, designed to demonstrate an environmentally responsible and culturally appropriate ocean-oriented resort.
