The Association for Design Professionals - Northern Pacific Chapter

GreenWorld® 2000

The second annual GreenWorld 2000 Sustainability Forum was held Thursday, May 18, 2000 at the Arctic Building’s Dome Room (700 3rd Avenue, Seattle WA). The Dome Room was filled with attendees from the northwest region, gathering to hear three of today’s environmental awareness leaders and to view and participate in the sustainable product exhibit prepared by select vendors and local designers.

GreenWorld was considered successful, with 169 guests paying at the door to hear the renowned speakers and visit the product exhibits. Paul Hawken, author, entrepreneur and environmentalist, was the event keynote speaker. Hawken provided an inspiring look at our roles as designers and how our design decisions contribute to creating a "green world". Hawken’s fee was donated to the Vallecitos Mountain Refuge in New Mexico. Also speaking, David Gottfried: CEO of WorldBuild Technologies, Inc. and founder of the U.S. Green Building Council, World Green Building Council and ASTM’s Green Building Committee and Judith Heerwagen, Ph.D., a local environmental psychologist. Special guests included event master of ceremonies Joyce LaValle: Senior Vice President of Marketing and communications for Interface Inc. and Carol Jones, FIIDA, IIDA President.

This event was made possible with volunteered time and dedication by many people who believe in sustainable design practices. The IIDA Washington State Chapter would like to thank the following committee members, sponsors and people who helped make GreenWorld 2000 a successful event. Thank you.

The Product Exhibit Committee developed a criterion for the vendor exhibit selection process based on a life cycle questionnaire for the product to be exhibited (link questions here). Once approved, each vendor was encouraged to invite up to three designers to help with the design of the product exhibit, designing the exhibit to illustrate the "greenness" of the product. An exhibit jury viewed the exhibits and voted on the winning exhibits, looking for clarity of information and design of exhibit.
