Awards & Competitions

Congratulations to the Emerging Professionals grant winners

At the 2010 Toast! annual board meeting, the winners of the Emerging Professionals programwere announced.  The following designers were recognized for their submissions:

Amanda Swartwout, SkB Architects - Grant Winner

Amanda created a proposal inspired by organizational biomimicry.  Her submittal takes inspiration from natural environments and seeks to strengthen the interior design industry by fostering symbiotic relationships.  The proposal suggests a collaborative support network connecting and uniting our vast range of professionals, organizations and students.  Collaborative industry events and CEU classes, a joint industry calendar and a mentorship program will all be established and promoted as a first phase.  By connecting and educating our industry, we will create more opportunities and marketability for all.

Mary Moore, Interior Architects - Honorable Mention

Mary focused her proposed study on the corporate work environments in 3 regions, North America, Europe and Asia. She planned to compare 3 regions to better understand trends and how they are impacted by place. She would compare and contrast each region in Workplace, Workspace and Sustainability.

Workplace would focus on the office as a whole including everything from break areas, conferencing and other specialty amenities and services. Workspace would provide a more granular view on individual workspaces like open office, closed office, hotelling spaces, size of workstations, privacy, potential for personalization and more. For her third component, sustainability, she would research how the initiative has influenced the workplace including finishes and energy reduction methodologies.

Julie Woolsey, Interior Architects - Honorable Mention

Julie’s proposal embraced work-life balance and gen Y’s desire to help the community be a better place. By working with troubled youth and citing programs like “Art with Heart” and “We Care”, her proposal designed a program that would encourage designers to break from their work-a-day world and give back. It was a rewarding project that entwined a lot of fun and creativity. Two aspects that renew inspiration as designers.

The ultimate goal was that this grant would start a beta program to inspire the community to help it grow and live long after the initial funding had expired helping others to remain inspired and become well-rounded members of our community.
