The Integrated Design Approach

On August 11, 2009, the Corporate Forum Advisor, Kim Parsely, led a discussion on the integrate design approach.

The integrated design process is a catch phrase in its prime. What does it mean to each of us? If you asked a mechanical engineer, you will probably hear about Building Information Modeling (BIM). If you reference the recent IIDA Perspective magazine article The Power to Deliver, you'd find that it means bringing the interior designer to the table early. But, aren't these just slices of the holistic meaning of Integrated Design? Isn't it really much more than that?   Join us in a dialogue about what it means to the many minds involved in a project.

Outreach

IIDA NPC reaches out to our members, to the industry and to our community, through meaningful programs, better communication tools and more collaboration with other organizations.

Community Service Programs through Membership Involvement

Last year the Membership committee of the NPC developed a Community Service Program through our Seattle City Center, we look forward to continuing our outreach efforts through 2011 and beyond! Starting from where Rebuilding Together left off, we provided four volunteer opportunities. This gives our chapter the opportunity to work with local non-profit organizations and build strong relationships with each other and our community.

  • March 24th- Jubilee Women’s Center – Prepare, serve, and share a meal with 34 residents
    • Dedicated to providing women a safe and supportive place to live and an opportunity to learn while becoming self-reliant in housing and employment. Visit: jwcenter.org
  • May 6th -VSA Arts of Washington – Art Spring at Seattle Center – Assist adults with a variety of art projects.
    • Dedicated to providing art opportunities to persons with disabilities. Visit: vsarts.org
  • August 15th-EarthCorps – Help with plant removal, clean-up and planting at Seward Park.
    • Dedicated to building global community through local environmental restoration service. Visit: earthcorps.org
  • November/December - TBD

The selection process was based on our chapter goals and interests such as housing and homeless, arts and education and the environment. These opportunities provide IIDA members to be hands on with smaller less funded local non-profit organizations. The committees’ intention is to find new organizations each year and welcomes comments, ideas and suggestions. Each event will be posted on the website with sign-up online. Detailed information will be forth coming on each event, via QuickNews and Website.

Advocacy

IIDA NPC supports the advancement of the Interior Design profession through state by state legislative efforts towards registration and licensing.

Licensing and Regulation

Interior Design laws help establish and maintain professional standards that protect the health, safety and welfare of the general public. IIDA firmly believes that legal recognition, achieved through licensing, registration, and certification brings uniformity to the profession, defines responsibility, and encourages excellence in the Interior Design industry.

Advocacy in the Northern Pacific Chapter

Currently, licensing legislation has been introduced in the state of Washington. IDCW (Interior Design Coalition of Washington) is a coalition with a goal to pass a Practice Act that legally recognizes the profession of interior designers in Washington State.

IDEAL for Idaho (Interior Design Education And Legislation) is a coalition dedicated to educating the interior design consumer as well as the interior designer. IDEAL’s goal is to legally define the interior design profession and enable qualified interior designers to practice their profession to the fullest extent of their capabilities.

Title Acts for the Interior Design industry were passed in both British Columbia and Alberta in 1987 and 1960 respectively.  The Title Acts continue to maintain professional standards that protect the health, safety and welfare of the general public.
